Blue H₂ is produced by reforming natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The author’s company has developed gas reforming technologies, such as an autothermal reformer (ATR), or an ATR coupled with a gas heated reformer (GHR) to produce blue H₂.

Methane pyrolysis uses heat to break down CH₄ into H₂ gas and carbon. Unlike SMR or ATR, methane pyrolysis does not produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, instead creating a solid carbon that can be used in various applications. Often referred to as turquoise H₂, methane pyrolysis does not require carbon capture and can use renewable energy among other energy types to power the heat source used.

Industry leaders are propelling advancements with innovative H₂-capable combustion solutions designed to optimize efficiency and reduce environmental footprints. This article will discuss the benefits of H₂, comparisons to alternative energies, sustainability and environmental implications, and H₂’s potential.

Having the raw data from one device is not enough in most cases to make informed decisions. Multiple data streams analyzed together can result in a more complete process story. Analyzing the insights from these data streams provides process information that supports actions that must be taken to achieve goals.

For manufacturers of products that carry H₂, the challenge is that while product safety must be proven before CE marking or release to the market, the specific procedure for this is usually not defined in detail in regulations and standards.

Fossil fuels have helped propel the journey into the modern world, but there is an element with far more power in its punch: H₂, which has about three times the energy by weight and when converted to electricity using a fuel cell, the only byproduct is water vapor.
