Hydrogen Optimized to expand green H2 production in Canada

Hydrogen technology company Hydrogen Optimized will continue to develop its RuggedCell water electrolysis system at its new site in Ontario, Canada, as part of the Grey-Bruce Hydrogen Hub.

Andrew T.B. Stuart, President and CEO of Hydrogen Optimized, said the company is aiming for a manufacturing capability of up to 500 MW of RuggedCell electrolyzers per year.

In September 2020, Hydrogen Optimized signed an MOU with ABB to jointly explore the development of large-scale green hydrogen production system connected to the electrical grid to offer clean, sustainable, affordable energy. The MOU also includes the preparation of a 100-MW plant design and commercialization strategies.

Applications using the produced green hydrogen include zero-emission transportation fuel supply, ammonia and other chemical production with non-fossil sources of hydrogen, as well as green metals production using hydrogen instead of a coking-type process.

The Canadian technology and manufacturing site will provide the infrastructure necessary to demonstrate the company’s electrolysis technology and associated electrical systems, including the activities outlined in the announced MOU with ABB.

"We are moving forward as quickly as possible to develop the technology to provide individual green hydrogen production plants at our customer sites, each in the hundreds of MW range," Stuart said.

Together, the companies plan to prove that Hydrogen Optimized’s RuggedCell water electrolysis technology can be used to develop an integrated product solution based on a 100-MW, single-module plant design concept.
