Norway's Equinor seeks UK funding for 1.2 GW low-carbon hydrogen plant

Norwegian energy company Equinor has sought funding to build a second major low-carbon hydrogen production facility in the northeast region of England. The new facility will help further reduce carbon emissions in the region.

Equinor, in partnership with the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is planning the H2H Production 2 project in the industrial Humber region. The projects targets 1.2 GW hydrogen production by 2028.

The project's funding is partly private and part of the cost is expected to be raised through the 16.4 million pounds ($19.97M) bid submitted to the UK government's Net Zero Hydrogen Fund.

The success of this funding bid will require a vote of confidence from the government and also further private and public investment to reach the final investment decision stage which is ambitiously set for 2025.

According to Equinor, this new project combined with Equinor's earlier bid for the 0.6 GW H2H Saltend project can potentially meet 18% of the UK's target for 10 GW of production capacity by 2030.
