Bulgartransgaz EAD launches market demand assessment survey for H2 transmission

Considering the European policies and priorities for decarbonization, Bulgartransgaz EAD is actively working to develop its infrastructure in accordance with the plans for large-scale development and entry of H2 into the energy mix in the EU. H2, as an energy carrier with zero emissions, is of key importance in the EU's plans for a phased transformation of the energy sector and the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050.

The REPowerEU Plan of the European Commission provides for a significant consumption of renewable H2 by 2030, equal to 20 MMt, with a target of 10 MMt of domestic production and 10 MMt of imports.

Bulgartransgaz plans projects in the field of H2, including for the construction of infrastructure for the transmission of pure H2 and the adaptation of the existing gas infrastructure for the transmission of H2-gas mixtures with a H2 content of up to 10%. The company is also an active participant in the initiatives European Clean H2 Alliance and European H2 Backbone.

In this regard, Bulgartransgaz EAD launches a non-binding market demand assessment survey for H2 transmission capacity. The company informs all current and potential market participants (producers, shippers and consumers) of the opportunity to submit their non-binding demand indications for H2 transmission capacity.

The results of the study will show the interest of market participants in the potential use of H2 as part of the future energy mix. The non-binding survey and its coordination with the neighboring operators will facilitate the timely planning of the required infrastructure.

The survey will identify the expected demand for H2 transmission capacity, the potential production sites in Bulgaria and the exit points to end users. The results will also contribute to the timely planning and construction of the necessary infrastructure for the transmission of H2 to and through Bulgaria.
