According to CNN, two French scientists discovered a potentially massive deposit of white H₂ beneath northeastern France. White H₂ is a naturally produced or present type of H₂ that produces only water when burned, making it an attractive clean energy source.

Commercial H₂ is produced in an energy-intensive process almost entirely powered by fossil fuels. White H₂ could be an untapped clean-burning energy source, but production remains small-scale and expensive. A catalyst for the current interest in white H₂ can be traced to Mali, where a gas containing 98% H₂ was found in 2011 and is still being produced.
