GreenH to develop H2 production and refueling site for Indian train project

GreenH Electrolysis has agreed to develop a H2 production and refueling station to support India’s first H2-powered train. The joint venture (JV) between H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies and GR Promoter Group entered into a contract with Medha Servo Drives, agreeing to build the facilities in Jind, Haryana.

Under the Indian Railways H2 fer Heritage initiative, Medha was awarded a contract for a pilot project to retrofit a diesel electric multiple unit rake, on the Sonipat-Jind section, to H2 and therefore achieve Indian Railways Net Zero goals.

GreenH will provide the necessary equipment from its newly constructed PEM electrolyzer manufacturing plant in the Jhajjar District, Haryana. The JV will supply a 1-MW electrolyzer which will operate round the clock and boast a capacity of 420 kg/d of H2. The refueling infrastructure is expected to integrate 3,000 kg of H2 storage, H2 compressors and two H2 dispensers.

The H2 dispensers will feature pre-cooler integration, allowing for quick refueling of the trains, and can adapt to their routes. The H2 production and refueling station will be a turn-key solution, providing full support to the end user through long-term service agreement for operation and maintenance purposes.

After Medha was awarded the contract by Indian Railways, it contracted GreenH to provide the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a H2 production and refueling station for the project. Indian Railways plans to operate 35 H2-powered trains as part of the initiative. The first will be run between Jind and Sonipat and are anticipated to begin in 2024.
