U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) announced that Nel Hydrogen will receive $50 MM from the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen Fuel Technologies Office to support the development of a new clean H₂ facility in Plymouth. This funding is part of a $750-MM investment in 52 projects across 24 states to dramatically reduce the cost of clean H₂ and reinforce America's global leadership in the growing clean H₂ industry. The new facility is expected to generate a total capital investment of up to $400 MM and create more than 500 good-paying clean energy manufacturing jobs in Michigan.

 “This investment will create hundreds of good-paying jobs, bring millions of dollars to our local economy, and keep Michigan at the forefront of clean energy innovation and technology,” Dingell said. “Green H₂ is one of the most promising technologies in the transition to a clean energy future and will support the industries that have long been central to our state, from mobility to manufacturing. I'm proud to have Nel Hydrogen here in Plymouth Township and will continue to work to make sure Michigan leads the way in the fight against climate change and work to achieve a net-zero economy."

Clean H₂ is set to play a vital role in reducing emissions from our most energy-intensive and polluting sectors. These sectors include key economic engines that are essential to the modern American economy and quality of life, such as heavy-duty transportation and industrial and chemical processes like steelmaking and fertilizer production. Clean H₂ can also support the expansion of clean electricity by providing a means for long-duration energy storage and offering flexibility and multiple revenue streams for all types of clean power generation—including renewables, advanced nuclear and other innovative technologies. By enabling the development of diverse, domestic clean energy pathways across multiple sectors of the economy, H₂ development will strengthen American energy independence and accelerate the American manufacturing boom that has already created over 800,000 manufacturing jobs since President Biden took office.

Managed by DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), these projects represent the first phase of implementation of two provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which authorizes $1 B for research, development, demonstration and deployment (RDD&D) activities to reduce the cost of clean H₂ produced via electrolysis and $500 MM for research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of improved processes and technologies for manufacturing and recycling clean H₂ systems and materials.
