Técnicas Reunidas and Sterling Generators to develop electrolyzers to produce green H2 in India

Sterling Generators Private Ltd, a member of Sterling and Wilson Private Limited, one of India's leading engineering, contracting and construction (EPC) companies, has announced the signing of an agreement with Técnicas Reunidas for the development of a green H2 electrolyzer with 1 MWe capacity.

Its start-up is scheduled for the last quarter of 2024, and it would later be expanded to 10 MW. The agreement was signed at the Spanish Embassy in India, with the presence of the Spanish ambassador, diplomats and officials of the country's Government and representatives of both companies.

Electrolyzers are devices that use electricity to produce H2 through a chemical process, called electrolysis, which separates the H2 and oxygen molecules that make up water. If the electrical current used comes from renewable energy, as will be the case with this electrolyzer, the H2 is obtained without emitting CO2 into the atmosphere, which is why it is called green H2.

Sanjay Jadhav, CEO of Sterling Generators Private Limited said, “Is confident that, as an extremely versatile energy carrier, green H2 has the potential to strengthen India's energy independence, resilience and innovation, boosting the transition towards a cleaner and greener future. Therefore, this agreement will reinforce our country's adoption of green H2 as a key component of its ambitious renewable energy goals; and will help transform India's abundant solar and wind resources into a strategic advantage in green H2 production.”

Joaquín Pérez de Ayala, director of Energy Transition at Técnicas Reunidas said, “This agreement will contribute to the integration of green H2 into India's energy landscape and has the potential to contribute to the decarbonization of basic sectors of heavy industry and the transport, which require it in a very relevant way. In addition, it will strengthen technological relations and the exchange of knowledge between India and Spain, stimulate innovation and economic development, and will be on the path to moving towards a greener future.

This collaboration is an example of the growing bilateral relations between India and Spain. And it is in an area of critical importance, such as green H2, one of the key sectors that have been highlighted in the joint statement made after the last bilateral meeting held by both countries, in which the objective of reaching to strategic agreements in health, smart cities, defense and impious energies.
