German coalition agrees financing details of H2 network

Germany's ruling coalition has agreed on a financing mechanism for the country's future H2 network. The deadline for building the network has been extended by five years to 2037 and private companies will be responsible for building it. The project will cost around €20 B and will be financed through user fees.

The core network for H2 fuel will extend over 9,700 km, with existing gas pipelines making up 60% of the network. The government will offer protection for investors in case of bankruptcy, with a government guarantee of around 6.7% return on equity before taxes. If demand is weak, network operators will have to shoulder some 24% of the costs.
