Canadian Energy Company plans green H2 facility at former Intalco site

A Canadian energy company unveils plans for a green H2 manufacturing and storage facility at the former Intalco aluminum smelter site near Ferndale. The AltaGas Ltd. project, estimated at $850 MM to $1 B, could create hundreds of jobs during construction. The project relies on federal funding, local political support, and public opinion for success.

AltaGas anticipates receiving a portion of the $1 B pledged by the U.S. Department of Energy to H2 producers in the Pacific Northwest. The facility aims to employ equitable hiring practices and utilize regional hydroelectric and wind power. It is projected to produce 100 metric t of H2, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 400,000 t. Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu welcomes the proposal, seeing it as an opportunity for clean energy innovation following the closure of the Intalco Works smelter in 2023.
