Italy, Germany and Austria sign cooperation deal for southern H2 link

Italy, Germany and Austria have agreed to collaborate on establishing a network for transporting H2 from North Africa through southern Italy to northern Europe. This initiative, known as the Southern H2 Corridor or SoutH2, aims to supply renewable H2 to major demand hubs in Italy, Austria and Germany, contributing to the EU's strategy to secure renewable H2 supplies by 2030.

The project, which has received priority status from the European Commission, involves a consortium of companies, including Italian gas grid operator Snam, committing over €4 B to build the pipeline by the early 2020s. The corridor is anticipated to play a crucial role in supplying southern German states with green H2. The EU's objective is to produce and import significant amounts of green H2 by 2030 as part of efforts to transition away from fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions. Green H2, generated through electrolysis using renewable energy, is considered a key component of this transition.
