Worcester Bosch to change H2 boiler ads over green marketing concerns

Boiler manufacturer Worcester Bosch has agreed to revise its marketing of H2 boilers after the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) raised concerns about misleading claims. The CMA found that Worcester Bosch's promotion of its "H2-blend ready" boilers, which cost up to £3,200, suggested that these products would significantly reduce carbon footprints and "future-proof" homes. In reality, the CMA noted, consumers might not experience these benefits and might end up in a similar situation with other existing boilers.

The CMA's investigation revealed uncertainties about the future use of H2 in home heating, as multiple studies suggest it may not be a viable large-scale replacement for gas boilers. The industry has been pushing for H2 as an alternative to gas, partly to delay the adoption of heat pumps, which are considered a more effective low-carbon solution.

Following the investigation, Worcester Bosch has committed to changing its advertising practices and informing its network of installers and retailers to correct any misleading marketing. The CMA emphasized the importance of clear information for consumers making significant purchases like new boilers.
