GTI Energy launches SUSTAIN H2 to accelerate underground H2 storage development

GTI Energy has introduced SUSTAIN H2, a new collaboration designed to fast-track the deployment of underground H2 storage (UHS) technologies. This effort will bring together researchers, policymakers, regulators and industry leaders to bridge the critical gap between Hstorage research and application.

H2 has the potential to revolutionize energy storage by converting surplus renewable energy, such as wind and solar into H2, and providing large-scale, long-duration storage solutions. Stored H2 can be utilized for a variety of demand applications, from transportation to industrial use, or blended with natural gas using existing pipeline networks. Effective implementation of a H2 economy will hinge on the development of large-scale, low-cost storage solutions, which will ensure uninterrupted, affordable, and secure energy.

“While discussions around hydrogen often focus on production and consumption, the infrastructure that connects these stages—particularly pipelines and storage facilities—has not received the same level of attention,” said Shadi Salahshoor, Ph.D., Senior Program Manager, GTI Energy. “SUSTAIN H2 aims to explore opportunities for collaboration and complementary activities that expedite the deployment of UHS, ultimately resulting in significant time and cost savings.”

Success depends on the inclusion of a mix of perspectives and real-world insights. SUSTAIN H2 will convene stakeholders from across the spectrum who are committed to advancing UHS.
