Norway's Equinor has abandoned its plans to export blue H2 to Germany due to high costs and insufficient demand. Initially, Equinor and RWE had signed an agreement to develop a H2 supply chain aimed at reducing emissions, involving the production of H2 from natural gas with carbon capture in Norway.
However, the proposed offshore H2 pipeline was deemed unviable, leading to the discontinuation of the project. Equinor's CEO had previously noted the potential costs could reach tens of billions of euros, with the pipeline alone estimated at around €3 B.
Without long-term commitments from European buyers, Equinor cannot justify such investments. While H2 supply for RWE's gas power plants will now be sourced within Europe, Equinor will continue pursuing other H2 projects in the UK and the Netherlands.
