Pemex and CFE could collaborate on green H2 project

Mexico's state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is exploring a partnership with state oil company Pemex to develop a green H2 project. Iris Cureño from CFE sees Pemex as a key commercial partner for creating green H2 synergies, potentially involving CFE producing the H2 or renewable energy for Pemex's processes. Pemex’s refinery in Salina Cruz is considered a prime location for this project.

Pemex has included green H2 in its 2023 sustainability plan and is open to a joint venture with CFE. Green H2, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, offers environmental benefits over conventional H2 production but faces high costs and regulatory challenges. The CFE is working with Mexican academics to develop local technology to mitigate reliance on expensive imports.

Incoming President Claudia Sheinbaum supports increasing renewable energy investments, contrasting with current President López Obrador's focus on fossil fuels. If successful, the Salina Cruz project could help establish the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as a green H2 hub, with further investments planned in the region.
