Tenaris reconfirms role in H2 transportation research

As the importance of investigating safe H2 transportation continues to grow, Tenaris is actively participating in joint industry projects, research task forces, and normative bodies to advance research on H2 materials and contribute to the next generation of transportation solutions.

Mihaela Cristea, Senior Product Manager for H2 Technology, was invited to share Tenaris’s experience at the Hydrogenius Symposium, one of the most prestigious events within the H2 community. The symposium was held at the Research Center for H2 Industrial Use and Storage at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, on September 12-13.

During the session on metallic materials, Cristea addressed the experimental challenges of measuring fracture toughness in H2 gas environments, particularly for pipeline transportation applications.

The Hydrogenius Symposium was followed by the Fall meeting of the HyLINE II JIP, also organized by the Kyushu University, along with SINTEF and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). HyLINE II JIP is a five-year initiative that builds on the original HyLINE project, launched in 2019 , and focuses on studying the material integrity of welded joints in offshore H2 pipelines and assessing their overall safety. Tenaris is collaborating with leading industrial partners, including Gassco, Equinor, TechnipFMC, TotalEnergies, and Norske Shell, to advance this initiative.

The HyLINE project aims to convert the existing Norwegian pipeline infrastructure of 8,800 km of subsea networks to H2, while simultaneously creating a new H2 network. Norway's pipeline network contains approximately 740,000 welded joints, which require special attention to ensure structural integrity in H2 environments.

"Our goal is to align Tenaris's research efforts with those of our industrial partners. Participating in this joint industry project and contributing to advancing research on material behavior in H2 environments are key to our strategy. We are leveraging our expertise and R&D capabilities to help create a new European H2 transportation network," explained Cristea.
