A key milestone has been achieved in the H100 Fife project with the completion of a domestic H2 gas network in Levenmouth, Fife. The new 8.4 km network will begin operation next year, delivering green H2 produced using renewable electricity from a nearby 7-MW offshore wind turbine.
Residents in Levenmouth will be offered the opportunity to join Scotland’s first green H2 community through the H100 Fife trial. This innovative initiative will enable participants to heat their homes and cook with carbon-free H2, offering a seamless experience comparable to natural gas but without emitting carbon when burned.
The H100 Fife project is expected to provide vital evidence to shape future low-carbon policies for Scotland and the UK, with critical decisions anticipated in 2026. It aims to showcase H2 as a practical and sustainable energy alternative, demonstrating its compatibility with existing home heating systems, including boilers and radiators.
To support the project’s rollout, efforts are underway to upskill gas engineers to connect homes to the H2 network. Additionally, a partnership with Fife College will see the opening of the UK’s first H2 training facility early next year. The facility will provide specialized training for Gas Safe engineers to install and maintain H2 appliances, ensuring a smooth transition for participants in the trial.
The H100 Fife project marks a significant step toward achieving Scotland’s low-carbon energy goals, combining cutting-edge technology with practical solutions to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining the comfort and reliability of existing energy systems.
H100 Fife Distribution Manager Max Biret said, “I'm thrilled to announce the completion of our green gas network. The exceptional teamwork and dedication from our SGN team and our contractors SMART Utilities made this possible. We’re grateful to the Levenmouth community for your trust, patience, and cooperation. Your support has been invaluable in helping us deliver a high-quality project on schedule.
“Having this new network in place means we can start converting customers to green H2 once our production and storage site is ready next year. We’re still welcoming more customers to join if you live in the network area. We’ll support you every step of the way through your energy transition.”
SMART Utilities Construction Manager Stuart Russell and his team installed the new network and will be connecting homes to it when it goes live. He said: “I was born and bred in Fife and feel very proud to be delivering this world first green energy project for the local community. I'm delighted to see that so many local people have taken the opportunity to be part of this first of its kind decarbonization scheme.”
