EQUANS and INOCEL partner to launch fuel cell energy storage and generation solution

EQUANS and INOCEL have signed a partnership agreement to develop an energy storage and production solution using carbon-free H2. This collaboration brings together INOCEL, a leader in high-power H2 fuel cells, and EQUANS, a world leader in the energy and services sector, to address low-carbon energy production challenges. The partnership aims to deliver a turnkey, high-performance, environmentally-friendly energy generation solution for a variety of applications, including:

  • Electrification of docks (cold ironing) to limit greenhouse gas emissions in ports, particularly for ships
  • Decarbonized powertrain and electricity generation for ships
  • Storage of intermittent renewable energies in H2 form for customer on-demand use
  • Load shedding and power grid balancing
  • Emergency power generation for industrial and commercial infrastructures such as data centers, hospitals, operational buildings and banks
  • Mobile generators for off-grid sites or those requiring additional power, replacing diesel generators and batteries.

By 2025, INOCEL and EQUANS will provide energy storage and generation solutions ranging from 300 kW to several MW, focusing on ports and smart grid infrastructure. These high-power levels, a key strength and differentiator of the solution, will enable companies to effectively commit to the renewable energy transition.

For the H2 generator component, INOCEL will provide the fuel cell, while EQUANS will handle containerization. For customers requiring a complete H2 solution including H2 production, storage, and power generation, INOCEL and EQUANS will combine their expertise and leverage their partner networks across the entire value chain. This collaboration enables them to deliver customized turnkey solution tailored to the customer’s needs.

This innovative solution advances energy decarbonization, especially in sectors where batteries cannot provide sufficient autonomy. It serves customers who want to manage the entire H2 value chain while addressing all challenges in a rapidly growing sector.

Jérôme Stubler, CEO of Equans said, “H2 must play a key role in the energy transition, and we see immense potential in its development to decarbonize industry and mobility. With INOCEL, we are providing an innovative, high-performance solution to support this strategic development.”

Jules Billiet, CEO of INOCEL said, “This strategic partnership illustrates our commitment to deploying innovative turnkey solutions integrating the entire H2 value chain. The collaboration between INOCEL and EQUANS enables us to offer our customers energy storage and generation solutions that combine performance, cost-competitiveness, and decarbonization of activities.”
