DNV launches H2Met joint industry project to advance H2 flow metrology

DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has launched the H2MET joint industry project (JIP) to advance metrology for 100% H2 flow applications. Building on previous work in renewable gases and CO2, H2MET aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of H2 flow measurement, ensuring a trusted foundation for H2 trading and supporting the role of H2 in a more efficient energy transition.

As H2 plays an increasing role in global decarbonization, standardized and precise flow measurement is essential to ensure transaction integrity in the emerging H2 economy. Through this initiative, DNV’s Technology Centre in Groningen, Netherlands, will provide an advanced testing environment for H2 operators and technology providers to validate metrology solutions. The project will contribute to the development of essential measurement standards, fostering industry readiness for H2’s expansion in energy systems worldwide.

“The H2MET project is a crucial step in driving technological advancements for H2 trading,” said Øyvind Nesse, Senior Vice President at Equinor. “By ensuring that H2 flow measurement technologies meet the required standards of accuracy and reliability, we are contributing to a safer and more efficient energy transition.”

"As H2 markets mature, robust metrology will be essential to ensure transparency, accuracy, and trust in H2 trading,” explained Prajeev Rasiah, Executive Vice President and Regional Director for Northern Europe, Energy Systems at DNV. “By bringing together industry leaders in the H2MET JIP, we are not only addressing technical challenges but also laying the foundation for a globally recognized H2 measurement framework—critical for scaling H2 as a cornerstone of the energy transition.”

The H2MET JIP provides a platform for industry collaboration, enabling participants to share knowledge and establish operational limits for H2 flow metering. Central to the project is a highly accurate, traceable reference system that will assess the performance of various H2 metering technologies, supporting the European H2 flow traceability chain and future H2 trading.

H2MET will also evaluate different metering technologies, drawing on DNV’s 50 years of expertise in natural gas flow measurement and its world-class testing facilities. As one of the few organizations globally equipped for advanced H2 flow research, DNV offers advanced testing and validation services to support industry adoption.

“DNV’s expertise in flow metrology—backed by PTB-approved accuracy standards and world-class facilities in Groningen—places us at the forefront of H2 metrology innovation,” said Ronald ten Cate, DNV’s Business Lead for Hydro(Carbon) Flow Metering. “H2MET is driving industry-wide efforts to standardize H2 flow measurement, establishing trusted guidelines and technologies essential for the H2 economy.”

As the energy transition accelerates, H2MET provides crucial support for H2 operators and technology providers, helping them develop reliable metering solutions. It also marks a key milestone in DNV’s commitment to global decarbonization.

The H2MET project is still open for participants to join in this vital industry collaboration. Interested parties can learn more and register their involvement via the DNV H2MET web page: https://www.dnv.com/article/metrology-for-H2-flow-h2met/. Results will be available to JIP members in Q1 2026.
