Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has announced that green H2 produced from offshore wind using the demonstration yacht “Winz Maru” was supplied onshore in the central breakwater area of Tokyo in the “Wind Hunter Project,” a zero-emission project utilizing wind power and H2 promoted by MOL. This marks the first time in the world that a ship has supplied green H2, produced on its own while underway, for use onshore.
Between FY2021 and FY2023, MOL conducted a demonstration test in Omura Bay (Sasebo City) with the Winz Maru and successfully completed all phases of H2 production, storage and usage of stored H2 onboard. Since FY2023, in response to the adoption of the “Prior Projects” in the Tokyo Bay eSG Project, MOL has focused on supplying domestically produced green H2 from the Winz Maru in Tokyo Bay to onshore facilities.
The Winz Maru makes it easy to handle and transport H2, a difficult process for H2 gas, by converting produced green H2 to methylcyclohexane (MCH) onboard the vessel in Tokyo Bay. To ensure sufficient supply, MOL has modified the MCH tanks and added turbine generators to the vessel. In addition, safety measures have been taken in light of rougher sea conditions in Tokyo Bay, compared to Omura Bay.
MOL plans to continue its green H2 production activities in Tokyo Bay, producing about 100 Nm3 of H2 (the equivalent of about 200 liters of MCH) in FY2025, while at the same time supplying electricity to a trailer home and other facilities in the central breakwater area of Tokyo.
MOL is also working on studying a demonstration vessel and H2 supply chains for Wind Hunter. Assuming that the H2 value chain will be established domestically in the future, we aim to construct a demonstration vessel and commercialize the vessel as early as the 2030s. Additionally, a model ship of the Wind Hunter will be exhibited in the “Transportation and Mobility" zone of the "Future Society Showcase" pavilion at the 2025 World Exposition ("Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan"), which will be held from Sunday, April 13th this year.
MOL is committed to promoting the creation of a green H2 supply chain and a decarbonized society through the Wind Hunter.
