TotalEnergies plans $16-B green H2 and ammonia project in Chile

TotalEnergies, through its Chilean subsidiary TEC H2 MAG, has applied for an environmental permit to develop a $16-B green H2 and ammonia project in southern Chile, according to a regulatory filing. The ambitious project is scheduled to begin operations in 2030 and will include a wind farm, seven electrolysis centers for green H2 production, a desalination plant, an ammonia plant and maritime infrastructure for shipping the ammonia.

The environmental permitting process is expected to take about 2 yr, with construction slated to begin in 2027. The ammonia plant will be commissioned in stages and is projected to produce up to 10,800 metric tpd. Chile has positioned itself as a leader in clean H2 development, but industry stakeholders have noted that slow permitting processes and limited infrastructure are hampering progress and eroding the country’s early advantage in this emerging energy sector.
