The first commercial hydrogen (H2) refueling station in Agioi Theodoroi, Greece, branded under AVIN, was officially presented today.
This €3-MM investment marks a significant milestone in promoting H2 mobility in Greece. The project stands out for achieving several national, regional and European firsts. It is the first publicly accessible, commercial H2 refueling station built in Greece, and among the first in Southeastern Europe. Moreover, it is the first in Europe to be co-financed (50%) by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) – Transport program, and the first to pave the way for the commercial deployment of purely green fuels in road transport in Greece.
The Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) is a high-tech, innovative installation built to stringent specifications. It enables the refueling of both light- and heavy-duty H2 vehicles, supporting the transition to clean energy sources and aligning with Motor Oil’s goal of developing sustainable transport solutions.
Coral Gas was responsible for the sourcing and transportation of green H2 from abroad, as well as its storage for the operation of the station. In the future, trailer filling will take place at the H2 loading terminal currently under construction by Motor Oil at its refinery.
bfs, the Group’s construction company, undertook and successfully executed the challenging tasks of constructing and supervising the test and safety operations of the station.
During the presentation event, all aspects of H2 transport, storage and supply were outlined, and detailed information was provided about the station’s operations and the potential benefits of this pioneering H2 mobility project in Greece.
Mr. Ioannis Raptakis, General Manager of AVIN OIL, stated: “The importance of alternative fuels and circular economy principles is evident in our development plan, with hydrogen playing a key role in the flagship projects already being implemented by the Group. Hydrogen is expected to be a key component in the production of zero-carbon fuels. Today, we are making this opportunity available to the end consumer, opening the way to hydrogen mobility and leading the way in future solutions already being tested across Europe.”
Mr. Panagiotis Charitopoulos, General Manager of Coral Gas, said: “At Coral Gas, our aim is to lead the energy transition. Fuels are fully aligned with our company’s DNA, making this a natural path for us to follow. At the same time, through our initiatives for clean energy solutions, we are proud to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.”
The event also featured a discussion between Mr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, and Mr. Konstantinos Chatzifotis, Director of European Affairs at the Motor Oil Group.
Mr. Chatzimarkakis commented: “Hydrogen is not just a climate solution — it is a chance for robust energy security and innovation. Greece has the potential to lead in shipping, transport, and energy storage. Motor Oil is already showing the way, actively promoting the green transition.”
Mr. Chatzifotis stated: “The construction and operation of Greece’s first commercial, publicly accessible hydrogen refueling station, along with the strategic use of blended funding tools, is a pioneering achievement. It represents a symbolically significant milestone in the hydrogen value chain being developed by the Motor Oil Group.”
With the launch of this first H2 station, Greece is now placed on the European map of modern road transport infrastructure. The AVIN station and the H2 trailers operated by Coral Gas are the first tangible outcomes of the Motor Oil Group’s strategic plan for developing a national H2 value chain.
