Onyx Power secures opportunity to connect to OGE’s Wilhelmshaven coastal H2 pipeline

Focusing on the long-term viability of the Wilhelmshaven location Onyx Power has signed an agreement with the gas grid operator Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE) on a possible connection to the “Wilhelmshaven Coastal H2 Pipeline”. With the signed agreement, Onyx Power has secured the opportunity to connect to the core network and feed H2 into the Germany-wide transport network after completion of the pipeline, which is scheduled for 2027.

“The possibility of connecting to the coastal pipeline is an important step towards the future viability of our location. The era of coal-fired power generation is coming to an end, which is why we need to set the right course now in order to play a role in the world of renewable energies and the H2 economy. We are very pleased that we have already been able to secure access to the upcoming Germany-wide H2 transportation network via the OGE pipeline,” explained Jörn Neumann, Head of Onyx Power’s Wilhelmshaven power plant.

Onyx Power is currently working on various projects to enter the H2 economy. The existing power plant site offers excellent conditions for this due to its immediate proximity to the LNG terminal Wilhelmshaven. Onyx Power is also receiving support from the ENERGY HUB Port of Wilhelmshaven business association, which is committed to establishing a H2 economy in the Friesland region.

“We are delighted that Onyx Power has secured the opportunity to connect to the core network alongside other players in Wilhelmshaven. We therefore very much welcome the opportunity to jointly support the market ramp-up of H2 as an energy source of the future. This opens up a wide range of prospects for the future development of the power plant site after coal-fired power generation and contributes to the goals of the ENERGY HUB,” explained Henrich von Kopp-Colomb, Head of Customer Solutions at OGE.

The Wilhelmshaven Coastal Line and the North Sea-Ruhr Link together represent the central connecting line for transporting H2 from the north to the centers of consumption. Both pipelines are part of the Germany-wide H2 core network, which was approved by the German government and the Federal Network Agency in October 2024. They ensure the connection of national producers and consumers of H2 as well as the connection to the northern import corridor for H2 and the transportation of the molecule to the northwest of Germany.
