Achieving production of pure methanol using recovered CO2 and electrolytic H2 with TOYO's proprietary technology

Toyo Engineering India Private Ltd., a subsidiary of Toyo Engineering Corporation, reached a significant milestone with the successful synthesis of methanol from H2 and recovered CO₂. This achievement was made under contract awarded by NTPC Limited (NTPC), a state-owned power company in India, in 2021 regarding the provision of methanol production technology.

On 3rd June, Toyo-India along with NTPC and other stake holders achieved the initial production of pure methanol at NTPC's facility. The methanol was synthesized using H2 generated through water electrolysis and CO₂ captured from flue gas of the NTPC coal power plant.

This demonstration plant is located within the Vindyachal Super Thermal Power Station located in Madhya Pradesh, India, which is owned by NTPC. Toyo-India was responsible for the basic design and procurement of key equipment based on Toyo-Japan’s proprietary CO₂-to-methanol synthesis technology (g-Methanol). The detailed design, procurement, and construction were executed by JACKSON Ltd.

This milestone marks the first successful production of methanol from CO₂ in India, with a production capacity of 10 tons per day. In a country with a vast renewable energy potential, this achievement marks a significant step towards a sustainable energy future.

Toyo-Japan, in collaboration with NGEL (NTPC Green Energy Limited) a group company of NTPC Ltd., is conducting a feasibility study for a commercial-scale eMethanol value chain at Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry under "Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Business Expense Subsidy". This technological demonstration brings us one step closer to establishing a value chain that leverages India's affordable renewable energy.

With its extensive experience in the chemical and energy sectors, TOYO remains committed to advancing sustainable technologies and contributing to the realization of a sustainable society by building innovative value chains.
