Germany-based engineering firm eCap Marine has announced two significant contracts to supply H2 propulsion systems for next-generation, zero-emission vessels. The company will deliver cutting-edge H2 power solutions for both container ships operated by Samskip and bulk carriers owned by Møre Sjø.
Leveraging its previous success retrofitting the offshore supply vessel Coastal Liberty with H2 propulsion, eCap Marine secured a contract with logistics provider Samskip. The deal covers the design and integration of H2 propulsion systems for two short-sea container vessels currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard in India. Branded as Samskip SeaShuttles, these ships are expected to be the world’s first to operate on green H2.
Each vessel will be outfitted with 3.2-MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, supported by marine-certified power electronics, safety systems and interfaces. The entire system will be housed in containerized units located on the aft deck. Delivery of these groundbreaking vessels is scheduled for 2027.
In parallel, Norwegian shipping firm Møre Sjø has tapped eCap Marine to supply onboard H2 propulsion systems for two 4,000-ton bulk carriers, currently being built at Gelibolu Shipyard in Türkiye. Tailored for operations along Norway’s coastal waters, these ships will also be delivered in 2027.
Each vessel will be powered by 1.7-MW PEM H2 fuel cells and will carry compressed H2 tanks exceeding 2 tons in capacity, permanently installed in the aft section. Fuel cells and associated electrical components will be located below deck to optimize space and safety.
