India launches green H2-powered ships to advance sustainable maritime transport

India has begun constructing its first green H2-powered ships, marking a major step towards eco-friendly maritime transportation. Announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the Lok Sabha, the initiative involves Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, each building a H2 fuel cell-powered vessel using indigenous technology. Backed by $13.1 MM from the National Green H2 Mission, the project will be implemented in two phases: retrofitting existing ships and developing H2 refueling infrastructure at major ports.

Strategic hubs such as Deendayal, Paradip, and Tuticorin Ports will become centers for green H2 production and export. VOCPA is also setting up a green methanol bunkering facility in Tuticorin. The program aligns with India’s broader clean energy strategy and includes a $5.8-B investment to upgrade inland waterways, further enhancing sustainable transport infrastructure.
