Metro celebrates H2-electric buses in Hobart

Metro celebrated the launch of its H2 electric buses (HEBs) with key partners and stakeholders in Hobart. The three bright green HEBs are part of Metro’s Hobart fleet in its zero-emission bus (ZEB) trial—a first for a public transport project in Tasmania using locally produced H2 as fuel.

These innovative buses use electric motors powered by batteries, which are charged by on-board H2 fuel cells, emitting only water vapor. The HEBs are refueled with green H2 at Metro’s dedicated refueling station.

This project was made possible with the strong support of the Tasmanian Government through Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania, along with the Department of State Growth (Tas), and key project partners Foton Mobility Distribution, H2H Energy, and the Blue Economy CRC. Our appreciation also goes to the many Metro teams whose hard work brought this project to fruition.

Over the next two years, the HEBs will continue to operate on a variety of Metro’s Hobart routes, collecting valuable data and insights on how this technology performs in Tasmania’s unique climate and terrain. This trial is a significant step forward in Metro’s modernization journey and will deliver important learnings for both Metro and the wider Tasmanian H2 industry.
