The administrative process for the construction of a green H2 plant in Pozo Fondón (Langreo) is moving forward with a new administrative step. The Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias published today the Strategic Environmental Report for the urban development plan, deeming its approval environmentally viable.
The former mining facility, owned by GRUPO HUNOSA, will house a green H2 production plant with the launch of the Mine-to-H2 project, developed by HUNOSA in collaboration with Hyrem, Alsa, Duro Felguera, the University of Oviedo, and the Polish Glowny Instytut Gornictwa (GIG). The facility will reuse the water discharged from the former coal mine entrance to produce green H2 using renewable energy, partially generated by a photovoltaic plant installed near the Fondón Well.
This is a circular economy project focused on sustainable mobility in central Asturias. It contributes to the decarbonization of key sectors and promotes the transition toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly environment and economy.
The planned investment amounts to €18 million, half of which will come from European funds through RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel). Community participation subjects the project to very specific deadlines, so the timely administrative progress of the project, essential for the execution of the works and the subsequent commissioning of the plant, scheduled for June 2027, is crucial to maintain funding for a strategic project for the mining regions and the energy transition.
This project reinforces the role of the historic Fondón Well, which abandoned coal mining to now house a geothermal and biomass heating network, the Hunosa Historical Archive, and the central station of the Mining Rescue Brigade.
