HydePoint, Subsea7 and EnBW to collaborate on feasibility study for offshore H2 production in the Dutch North Sea

HydePoint, Subsea7, and EnBW have initiated an open collaboration to investigate the potential integration of offshore H2 production systems with offshore wind infrastructure in the Dutch North Sea. The parties aim to jointly explore innovative and scalable concepts for H2 generation at sea, while remaining open to complementary initiatives in this emerging field.

Nils Magne Reilstad, CCO, HydePoint As, said, “The collaboration enables flexible and cost-efficient integration of offshore wind energy into the energy system. This approach supports Europe’s accelerated transition to a net-zero energy future.”

“This collaboration brings together complementary expertise to tackle one of the key challenges in offshore H2 production — driving down the levelized cost of H2. By working together, HydePoint, EnBW, and Subsea7 will explore innovative solutions to help unlock the full potential of green H2 at scale,” said Stian Sande, Energy Transition Strategy Director at Subsea7.

Tina Fuchs, Head of New Development Offshore Wind at EnBW, said, “We look forward to this joint research, which we expect to advance the energy transition through H2-based flexibility. With this project, we are supporting offshore wind integration in our home market of Germany as well as in the Netherlands, which are both at the forefront of offshore wind system integration.”

The initiative will focus on advancing the technical and commercial understanding of offshore H2 platforms, exploring multiple deployment scenarios for semi-centralized H2 architectures within the Dutch North Sea. Semi-centralized offshore H2 production aims to combine the transport and installation benefits of modular electrolyzer building blocks with the economies of scale of centralized electrolyzer platforms. Drawing on complementary expertise in offshore engineering, energy infrastructure and green H2 technologies, the study aims to shape future development pathways and position the partners at the forefront of emerging offshore H2 opportunities.
