NGH2P’s engagement with Promigas’ H2-natural gas pilot in Colombia

As part of his participation in the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Clean Energy Learning Laboratory (CELL) in Cartagena, Colombia, James Mnyupe, Head of the Namibia Green H2 Program (NGH2P), visited Promigas’ Heroica Station in Mamonal, Cartagena. This facility is pioneering the blending of green H2 into natural gas networks, with the current pilot achieving injection of approximately 1%–2% H2 into the natural gas stream. The project also involves ongoing research and development to scale up both volume and blend levels.

Why this matters for Namibia. Reflecting on the visit, James Mnyupe stated, “This is an important lesson for Namibia. As we design infrastructure that may initially transport molecules like natural gas, we must plan with the future in mind. The key question we are now pondering is: how do we optimize our investments today to ensure our pipelines and systems can handle high blends of green H2 tomorrow? This kind of techno-economic foresight is essential for building a resilient and sustainable energy network that will serve Namibia for decades to come.”

Namibia’s growing H2 economy has to anticipate not just the production of green H2, but the shared infrastructure that supports hybrid systems (natural gas + H2) in transport, storage and distribution. Lessons from Promigas highlight the importance of early technical design choices, regulatory readiness, and ensuring that infrastructure is future-proof.
