China has launched its first coal-to-chemicals project that incorporates green hydrogen, now in commercial operation in Inner Mongolia’s Duolun region. Operated by the state-owned Datang Group, the project is expected to produce about 70.6 billion cubic meters of hydrogen annually, supported by a 150-megawatt wind and solar facility that can also supply excess power to the grid.
Designated a national hydrogen demonstration project, it is being positioned as a model for greening China’s coal-based chemicals sector—an industry that remains important for reducing import dependence but contributes significantly to China missing its 2025 carbon-intensity goals.
