Denmark has officially inaugurated HySynergy, one of Europe’s few low-carbon H2 plants, marking a significant step toward cleaner industrial energy. Located in Fredericia, the facility uses eight electrolyzers powered by solar and wind energy to produce about 8 tpd of H2 in its initial phase. The H2 will serve local refineries and be exported to Germany.
Despite its promise, the green H2 sector faces steep challenges — including high production costs, technological immaturity, and delayed projects. Originally slated to open in 2023, HySynergy itself faced setbacks before completion.
At launch, the project’s capacity is 20 megawatts (MW), but Everfuel (which owns 51%) plans to expand it to 350 MW. CEO Jakob Korsgaard emphasized the need for strong political support and EU policy alignment, particularly under the RED III renewable energy directive, which targets 42.5% renewable energy in EU consumption by 2030.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports only four operational low-carbon H2 plants in Europe, all below one megawatt—making HySynergy a standout in scale. However, the agency warns that few announced projects are likely to be running by 2030 unless political and economic momentum increases.
