China's first Type 4 hydrogen generator (MEGC) officially begins production

CIMC-Hexagon Hydrogen Energy Development (Hebei) Co., Ltd. (CIMC-Hexagon) announced the launch of China's first 20-foot Type 4 hydrogen multi-element gas container (MEGC). This breakthrough bridges the domestic technology gap for Type 4 hydrogen MEGCs and marks significant progress in the localization of high-pressure hydrogen storage and delivery equipment in China. Backed by international certification and wide application, this product lays a solid foundation for the expansion of Chinese-made hydrogen equipment into the Asian market.

Core technologies for world-class hydrogen storage and delivery solutions. This 20-foot Type 4 hydrogen MEGC combines CIMC-Hexagon's global technological resources with local manufacturing capabilities. It utilizes Type 4 composite cylinders, offering high storage capacity, lightweight design, modular flexibility, and enhanced safety. With an operating pressure of 38 MPa, the standard 40-foot container can store over one ton of hydrogen.

The MEGC meets international standards, including ADR 6.8 and TPED (2010/35/EU), and complies with global transport regulations. It is suitable for road, rail, and inland waterway transportation, addressing the need for efficient and economical hydrogen logistics. Compared to conventional solutions, the MEGC offers significant weight reduction, greater capacity, and intermodal compatibility—lowering the total cost of ownership and the cost per kilogram of hydrogen shipped. Thanks to its modular design, the MEGC supports a variety of configurations, from 10 to 45 feet, providing flexibility for diverse customer needs and optimizing costs throughout the lifecycle, particularly for medium- to long-distance, high-volume hydrogen shipments.

CIMC-Hexagon combines the strengths of its parent company: Hexagon Purus's more than six decades of experience in high-pressure hydrogen storage and composite materials—over 700 MEGC systems are in operation globally—and CIMC ENRIC's strengths in the hydrogen equipment industry chain and decades of energy equipment manufacturing experience. With this synergy, CIMC-Hexagon controls the entire process from core components to system integration, ensuring world-class product performance and reliability.

A two-market strategy driving the commercialization of hydrogen storage and delivery. CIMC-Hexagon is implementing a two-market strategy: "Targeting the Asian market first, then the domestic market." Initially, CIMC-Hexagon will leverage CIMC ENRIC's foundation in Southeast Asia to expand its reach into the Asian market, capturing new market share with certified and regulatory-compliant products. In parallel, CIMC-Hexagon will accelerate the research, development, and certification of the MEGC series at various pressure levels to complement its product portfolio.

In the domestic market, CIMC-Hexagon plays an active role in defining hydrogen storage and delivery standards and promoting the implementation of MEGC, which meets China's hydrogen infrastructure regulations, to support the national "dual carbon" target . Going forward, CIMC-Hexagon will maximize the synergy of its parent company's technology, distribution channels, and production capacity to optimize the cost and efficiency of hydrogen delivery. CIMC-Hexagon will also provide tailored solutions to regional market needs, gradually build a sales and service network, and develop as a core supplier of hydrogen storage and delivery equipment.

CIMC-Hexagon remains committed to technology-driven innovation, broader integration of its parent company resources, and localized production of hydrogen storage and delivery solutions. CIMC-Hexagon strives to provide essential equipment support for the development of a large-scale hydrogen industry, while contributing to a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system.
