ITM and DB Systemtechnik to forge innovation and research partnership

ITM Power plc and DB Systemtechnik GmbH have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to forge an innovation and research partnership for the development, piloting and testing of green energy solutions for the transport and critical infrastructure sectors.

This builds on the agreement signed between ITM Power and Deutsche Bahn in March 2025 to collaborate on sustainable transportation and infrastructure solutions. The collaboration will explore opportunities to deploy green hydrogen to support the decarbonization of rail transport and associated mobility solutions, including locomotive, bus, and truck fleets, as well as the energy resilience requirements of railway infrastructure. The partnership will also evaluate solutions that enhance energy resilience and self-sufficiency, including the production, sourcing and storage of green fuels for day-to-day operations.

As an initial step, ITM Power and DB Systemtechnik intend to undertake a front-end engineering design (FEED) study to assess the technical configuration, site integration, operational requirements and commercial framework for the potential applications of ITM's electrolyzer technology at Deutsche Bahn sites.

Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, said, "We are delighted to take the next step in our close collaboration. The agreement and planned FEED study mark an important progression in our relationship and further underline the potential role of green hydrogen in the decarbonization of critical transport infrastructure."

Dr. Hiie-Mai Unger, CEO of DB Systemtechnik, said, "The collaboration with ITM Power underlines our commitment to driving innovation in sustainable railway systems. The planned FEED study will provide valuable insights into how green hydrogen can be integrated into our infrastructure, strengthening both decarbonization efforts and operational resilience across the DB network."
