The Appalachian region is well suited to be one of the nation’s clean energy H₂ hubs because of its natural gas resources, infrastructure, storage capacity, workforce and industrial demand, according to a recently released report conducted by NETL.

At least 20 groups from across the U.S. have submitted final applications to the U.S. Department of Energy hoping to receive up to $1.25 B in federal funding and become one of six to 10 clean H₂ hubs, according to a survey conducted by S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Babcock & Wilcox announced that Black Hills Energy (BHE) has selected its BrightLoop H₂ generation technology for the feasibility study of a proposed project to produce clean H₂ from coal and capture CO₂ emissions at BHE’s Neil Simpson Power Plant in Gillette, Wyoming.

Total active H₂ projects have increased by nearly 100 month-over-month (March–April), according to Gulf Energy Information’s Global Energy Infrastructure (GEI) database. With nearly 50% market share, Western Europe continues to account for most H₂ projects under development, followed by the Asia-Pacific region (22%) and the U.S. (13%).

Worley and Advisian have been chosen to undertake a detailed assessment of Xcel Energy’s natural gas system in the U.S. to determine the feasibility of injecting and blending H₂ into Xcel Energy’s 36,000 miles of distribution pipeline.

Southern California Gas Co. is collaborating with GTI Energy to study the use of H₂ and H₂ blending in hard-to-decarbonize commercial and industrial processes, continuing its efforts to help the company and California achieve net-zero aspirations.
